'Sree a small fry, big names involved'

KOCHI: Even while Mumbai and Delhi police departments are betting big on their catch of bookies including IPL cricketers in IPL spot-fixing scandal, top police officials of Kerala Police are of the opinion that the cricketers like Sreesanth might be small players and many big shots are involved in the betting in which crores of money is being circulated.

"Sreesanth is just a small fry. Many other people are involved in it. Let's see how the probe is turning out to be," the police officer said and added that the players could indulge in such practices only with the strong support from power corridors.

"Only a detailed probe could unearth the real operators behind the whole network. Mumbai and Delhi Police departments should not just limit their probes with the arrest of the three IPL players and the small time bookies," the officials said and added the betting incident would have come to light after dealings between a few big shots went awry in sharing the money raised out of betting.

According to Kochi range inspector general K Padmakumar, state police could launch a detailed probe into the betting case only if Mumbai Police and Delhi Police get information during interrogation about a similar betting episode that have had occurred in Kerala, and apprise the state police about it, or someone gives a fresh complaint to the Kerala police submitting that similar spot betting took place in so and so match in the state.
