Broad scalps Warner to rattle Australia

NEW DELHI: Australian run chase got off to a bad start as Stuart Broad had opener David Warner caught behind by Jos Buttler in the sixth over in their Champions Trophy Group A opener at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday.

Scorecard | Points Table

Broad drew Warner (9) to drive but the opener ended up edging it and keeper Buttler dived to his left to take a good catch.

Earlier, Ian Bell's 91, an unbeaten 37-ball 46 by Ravi Bopara and Jonathan Trott's 43 took England to 269/6.

James Faulkner and Clint McKay took two wickets each in quick succession as England innings hit a roadblock, but Bopara smashed a six and 3 fours in his fiery knock to take England to a competitive total.

Ian Bell hit a 115-ball 91 before he was clean bowled by Faulkner.

Bell hit seven fours in his knock that ended after the opener missed a straight delivery from Faulkner.

England lost another wicket in the next over when Joe Root hit a McKay delivery into the hands of captain George Bailey at mid-wicket.

England lost their fifth wicket when Clint McKay clean bowled Eoin Morgan round his legs and in the next over Jos Buttler edged a Faulkner delivery onto his stumps.

Jonathan Trott hit a 56-ball 43 before Mitchell Starc had him caught behind by Matthew Wade.

Trott hit just one four in his knock and was looking to accelerate England innings and chased a wide ball but got only a thin edge.

Opener Ian Bell hit a half-century as England crossed the 150-run mark in the 32nd over.

Bell hit 4 fours in his fifty that came off 70 balls to bring up England's 100 in the 23rd over.

Shane Watson gave Australia the first breakthrough when he had England captain Alastair Cook caught behind by Matthew Wade.

Watson bowled just a wide delivery at good length and Cook went to hit it through the covers but ended up getting a thin edge for Wade to take an easy catch.

Cook hit 3 fours in his 42-ball 30 and put up a 57-run opening stand with Ian Bell, bringing up England's fifty in the tenth over after winning the toss and opting to bat.
