JOHANNESBURG: Vernon Philander became the fastest South African to 100 Test wickets on Friday, overtaking Dale Steyn by reaching the mark in his 19th match. Steyn took 20 matches.
Philander removed Shikhar Dhawan at the start of India's second innings in the first Test at Johannesburg's Wanderers for the record. Philander was the joint second-fastest bowler anywhere to 50 Test wickets last year.
England's George Lohmann is the fastest on record to 100, taking his milestone wicket in his 16th Test, also in Johannesburg, in 1896. Of the modern-era players, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is also playing in the Wanderers Test, is the quickest to 100. Ashwin needed 18 matches.
Philander took 4-61 in India's first innings to close in on the record and also made 59 batting.
