Capitalising on a flying start provided by Parthiv Patel (26 off 14), Shikhar Dhawan kept the hosts at bay and hit a magnificent fifty.
Dhawan scored 58 off 40 balls and shared 73-run-stand with Hanuma Vihari for the second wicket.
Dhawan reached his half-ton in 36 balls and guided Hyderabad past 100 before falling to Mitchell Johnson in the 13th over.
His knock was studded with six boundaries and two magnificent sixes.
Skipper Cameron White then joined Vihari and accelerated the scoring rate. While Vihari appeared calm, White looked merciless.
At the score of 166, Vihari became second victim of Lasith Malinga after scoring 37-ball-41.
White stayed unbeaten at 43 off just 23 balls. He hit three sixes and as many boundaries during his fiery cameo.
Malinga had earlier sent back Patel after good start provided by him after Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bat.
Mumbai replaced Maxwell, Abu Nechim with Pollard, Dhawal. Hyderabad remained unchanged.
