New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum said he would also have batted first, given the chance, with the McLean Park wicket looking to be full of runs.
Both sides are unchanged with unbeaten New Zealand playing the same line up for the fifth consecutive game.
"It's really tough on the guys missing out, but we have got some nice combinations going and it is a good problem to have," McCullum said.
Afghanistan, who have one win from four games, admitted to be suffering from jetlag after crossing the Tasman Sea twice in the past week in a hectic World Cup schedule.
"But we'll try our best to put a score on the board," captain Mohammad Nabi said.
