Mumbai: IPL chairman Ranjib Biswal on Tuesday said that no decision has been taken yet on banning cheerleaders from the popular T20 league.
"We have not taken any decision on banning cheerleaders from the IPL and after parties are already not there," Biswal told PTI. The cheerleaders have been a regular feature at the IPL since the inaugural edition in 2008. (PCB Chief Meets New BCCI Secretary )
Earlier on Monday, it was reported that the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is mulling over the idea of no after-match parties and cheerleaders in IPL as they look to restore the reputation of the Tournament.
Sources say that the BCCI has proposed banning the two activities from IPL 8. The sources also said that alcohol serving will be banned too as some stadiums do that during the matches.
This came after the suspension of Chennai Super Kings chief Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra in the IPL spot fixing scandal. There will be stricter code of conduct for the players, officials and support staff. (The Short and Long of India's Success )
IPL was rocked by spot-fixing controversy in IPL 6 when three cricketers - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan - were guilty of spot-fixing during an IPL match. Actor Vindoo Dara Singh and CSK chief Meiyappan were also involved in betting and had links with bookies. While Vindoo got a reprieve from the Supreme Court, Meiyappan was found guilty of betting.
IPL-8 takes place from April 8-May 24.
