Melbourne: South Africa have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during Sunday's World Cup match against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the International Cricket Council said.

Match referee Jeff Crowe found the South Africans fell one over short in the stipulated time and docked skipper AB de Villiers 20 per cent of his match fee and 10 per cent for the rest of the team. (De Villiers Slams 'Unacceptable' Performance)

"In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct for minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount," a release from the governing body said. If South Africa fall short of the required over-rate again, de Villiers could be suspended for one match of the World Cup.

South Africa, who lost to India by 130 runs, face the West Indies at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.
