Continuing from an overnight score of 72, Smith started the day with a glorious shot through covers off Shami and orchestrated the shift of momentum to his side from the visitors.
Smith was benefitted in the company of Brad Haddin, who shrugged off a long-drawn lean patch to race away to a swift half-century. Indian bowlers erred in their line from the word go and both Smith and Haddin made the most of the situation.
On Day 1, Smith was made to toil hard for his runs had to bide his time to reach 72 off 152 balls. On Day 2, Smith reaped the rwards of staying patient. He flicked and pulled and drove handsomely on his way to 2,000 Test runs and reached his century off 191 balls, his second as Test captain.
