Rohit Sharma looks all set to miss the limited overs part of India's series against the West Indies starting this month after failing to recover from his shoulder injury.

The stylish right-handed batsman from Mumbai had suffered a fractured finger during the second ODI in England and subsequently missed the rest of the series . He was also ruled out of the Champions League Twenty20 as Mumbai Indians went into the tournament with a stand-in skipper .

The multiple injuries meant India have had to promote Ajinkya Rahane to partner Shikhar Dhawan at the top. Media reports suggested that the combination could be persisted with against the West Indies with Murali Vijay as the backup opener. (Chris Gayle to Miss ODI Series in India )

However, reports indicated Rohit could be back in time for the three-Test series against West Indies starting October 30. (Rohit Sharma Launches Cleanliness Campaign )

With a grueling tour of Australia scheduled later in the year and the World Cup soon after, the selectors are not very keen on forcing one of their star batsmen into an early return.

Rohit will need to prove his fitness before the Test series starts and he could feature in the Duleep Trophy semi-final (provided West Zone beat East Zone in their quarterfinal). If that does not happen, Rohit could be asked to play for the Board's President's XI, which will take on the West Indians in a three-day tour game in Kanpur from October 25.
