Mumbai Indians had lost all their first five games in the UAE leg of Indian Premier League 2014 before coming back strongly to win two at their home ground in Wankhede.
Mumbai Indians extended their winning streak at the Wankhede Stadium to a record ten games after beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs on Tuesday. This is a record for most consecutive wins by a team at a single venue. In a game that will be known for its heated on-field spat between Kieron Pollard and Mitchell Starc, an all-round Mumbai Indians performance raised hopes of a revival of fortunes for them in this year's Indian Premier League. The team which has the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting as mentors, had surprisingly lost its first five games during the UAE leg before returning to win two at their home ground in Mumbai. (Highlights)
After electing to field first, the Royal Challengers Bangalore were not tight enough in their bowling and conceded 25 extras, the most by any side in IPL 2014. Kieron Pollard, who made 43 runs off 31 balls in a 97-run partnership with Rohit Sharma, is now the highest run-getter for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2014 with 203 runs to his tally. Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma once again shone with the bat and with his 35-ball knock of 59 not out, he earned his eighth Man of the Match award in the IPL. There were four sixes in Sharma's innings, that took his sixes tally in the IPL to 119 to tie with Suresh Raina, second to Chris Gayle's 187. While Mumbai's performance was all about positivity, Royal Challengers Bangalore all-rounder Yuvraj Singh continued his dismal run with the bat after he was run out for only 6 thanks to some great footwork from Pollard. Yuvraj, who was roped in for Rs 14 crore in the auctions, has managed only 141 runs in seven innings so far.
Although RCB captain Virat Kohli could not lead his team to victory despite a well-paced 35, he has now become the second quickest player to score 1,000 runs as captain (in 32 innings), second only to Sachin Tendulkar, who managed the feat in 31 innings.
One thing the Mumbai Indians team might want to forget in the RCB game is Pawan Suyal's second over, where the quickie was smothered for 28 runs thanks to Gayle. This is a record for the most number of runs conceded in a single over in this year's IPL. However, Suyal came back strongly by taking the prized scalp of Kohli in his third over, for which he was also given recognition in the post-match presentation.
