Yuvraj Singh towers over Delhi at Kotla

NEW DELHI: A magnificent 96* by Yuvraj Singh helped Punjab beat Delhi by six wickets in their second match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (North Zone) here at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 229, Punjab recovered from a poor start thanks to a 143-run fifth-wicket partnership between Yuvraj and Gurkeerat Singh (53*) and won with three overs to spare.

Punjab were off to a poor start when their opener Jiwanjot Singh was out for a duck and Manan Vohra (15) too was back in the pavilion by the end of seven overs.

Mandeep Singh (16) failed to capitalise on a start as he was bowled by Parwinder Awana, making the score 57/3 at the end of 16 overs. Gitansh Khera (33) showed some resistance at the other end and was lucky to be dropped twice.

As Yuvraj walked out, the sun made an appearance too and the conditions became better for batting.

The southpaw timed his innings perfectly and quickly switched gears as the slower bowlers came to the scene. He hit Rajat Bhatia for a huge six over deep mid-wicket and followed it with a classy square cut to the boundary.

Even Sumit Narwal was hit for back to back boundaries by Yuvraj in the 36th over. The strapping southpaw provided the much needed momentum to the innings and was lucky to be dropped by Delhi skipper Gautam Gambhir at cover. Yuvraj brought up his fifty with a superb four through extra cover. Gurkeerat Singh provided good support and hit four boundaries and a six.

Earlier, Delhi lost their top five batsmen with just 53 thanks to a fiery spell by Siddharth Kaul (4/37).
