The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council said on Wednesday that the first phase of the tournament’s seventh edition will be played in the UAE from 16 April to 30 April.
A total of 20 matches will be played in three stadiums: the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi; the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium, Sharjah; and the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
The opening match will be in Abu Dhabi between the defending champions Mumbai Indians and the 2012 IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders. This is the second time that IPL is being shifted overseas because of a clash of dates with general election in India. The 2009 edition was played in South Africa.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said earlier that it had chosen the UAE and Bangladesh to host IPL matches this year, the latter only if it was not possible to stage them in parts of India where elections would already have been concluded.
Many state governments have indicated that IPL matches can be played in such venues, and BCCI believes the remaining part of IPL 2014 can be conducted in India from the first week of May.
The schedule for the remaining 40 matches will be announced soon. The match-schedule for the UAE leg can be accessed on the following link: http://www.iplt20.com/schedule.
On 30 April, the last day of IPL 2014 matches in the UAE, the Mumbai Indians team will play Sunrisers Hyderabad in Dubai. The second phase of the IPL, scheduled between 1 May and 12 May is expected to be held in India. Bangladesh would be the alternate venue. From 13 May, all matches will be played in India. The final is scheduled on 1 June.
