ICC World Twenty20: Wayne Parnell released from South Africa squad to attend court hearing on drugs charge

Wayne Parnell was detained by the Mumbai Police for use of illegal drugs in a party in Juhu during Indian Premier League 2012. The South African all-rounder will miss the ICC World Twenty20 clash versus the Netherlands on Thursday.

South Africa's left-arm medium-pacer Wayne Parnell (right in pic) has been released from the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 squad to attend a compulsory Mumbai court hearing in relation to the drug charges levelled against him during the Indian Premier League 2012. On May 20, 2012, the Mumbai police detained 90 people from a party in a hotel of which 86 had tested positive for illegal drugs. This list included Parnell and his erstwhile Pune Warriors India teammate, Rahul Sharma.

Parnell, who did not play South Africa's first two games in the Super-10 stage, is now set to miss South Africa's next match against the Netherlands at Chittagong on Thursday. (World Twenty20 points table)

According to Cricket South Africa website, Parnell's manager, Donne Commins said, "Wayne has been called to appear before the court in India purely for procedural purposes in relation to the courts ongoing administration of the case concerned. Our understanding is that there will be no substantive enquiries made of him at the hearing, nor will the matter be progressed otherwise than as a matter of procedure."

On the eve of the game against the Netherlands, South Africa team manager Mohammed Moosajee spoke about the situation.

"We were made aware before the T20 World Cup that Wayne would have to travel to India to appear in court as a matter of procedure and we have made provision for this in our planning. It's unfortunate to lose him for a game in the middle of an important tournament him but we must respect the law. Furthermore, Wayne has expressed no wrongdoing so we hope that the case can be concluded as soon as possible," said Moosajee.

Both Parnell and Sharma had denied using any illegal drugs when they were detained in 2012. Parnell was granted bail after a court appearance in 2013.

While Sharma has the opportunity to start afresh in the next edition of the Indian Premier League with his new franchise Delhi Daredevils, Parnell will also hope get his name cleared soon.
