Irfan Pathan sets sights on World Cup

JAIPUR: And, you thought the World Cup is still a year away! For Irfan Pathan, the preparations, however, have already begun.

Recovering from injury, Irfan says his ultimate aim is to don the India colours on cricket's ultimate stage.

"With the tournament a year away, I want to regain my position in Indian team. I'll be playing more and more domestic games, and I'm sure my hard work will pay off," an optimistic Irfan told TOI.

While, regular injuries and inconsistent form have played a major role in his career, Irfan was happy to be back in business. Playing for Baroda as a specialist batsman, Irfan says the next few weeks are going to be extremely crucial for him.

"I am back among runs, and now the next target is to start bowling regularly. I have to be completely match-fit in the next few weeks and I am working hard for that," Irfan said.

The speedster has been advised by the physio to take things easy, and Irfan says the formula has worked well for him.

"I am happy with the way I have batted, and it's really been a morale booster for me. Once I start bowling regularly, things would only get better," Irfan said.

Despite a fascinating debut a decade back, life hasn't been a bed of roses for the Baroda pacer. While, a lot of youngsters have made a mark in Indian cricket, Irfan has failed to cement his place in the team.

Ask him about that, and 'all-rounder' Irfan isn't ready to dwell into the past. "There will more and more opportunities coming my way. I need to use them properly."

Aware of the fact that it won't be easy to manage a berth in the team, Irfan said more competition would motivate him to perform better.

"When I debuted for India, there was huge competition. If you are eyeing a berth in the national team, you will have to such competitions. Without tough challenges, it's not possible to progress as a cricketer," the all-rounder pointed out.

Taking lessons from the past, Irfan however, is careful about the road ahead.

"I want to improve on my fitness level, and that's going to be the key to success. I will be visiting the NCA again to reassess the fitness level, and if I'm fit, results will come automatically," Irfan felt.

Having encountered the highs and lows early in life, Irfan looks to accomplish his mission World Cup!
