When Kapil 'Mankaded' Peter Kirsten

DURBAN: Gary Kirsten is a familiar name for Indian cricket fans but does Peter Kirsten ring a bell too?

It might for those who have a good memory and claim to be genuine aficionados of the game. He was the last player to be out Mankaded in an ODI, during India's first tour of South Africa in 1992-93, and that too by the great Kapil Dev.

Mankading is a rare of form of dismissal when the batsman at the non-striker's end walks out of his crease and a bowler takes off the bails in his delivery stride. It was first done by Vinoo Mankad in a Test match in Australia in 1947 and only four players have got out this way in the longer version.

In ODIs too, it has happened thrice, the last being Kirsten in Port Elizabeth. "They were losing and couldn't get me out.. That was the only way probably Kapil could have dismissed me in that series," Kirsten, who is now a commentator with SuperSport, told TOI.

Getting a batsman out in that fashion is regarded in cricket circles as unsporting. Generally, the norm is to warn the batsman. Kirsten though reveals he had been warned by Kapil earlier during that series. "I would be lying if I say that Kapil didn't warn me. He did the game before," he said. But after he was given out during that game which India subsequently lost, there was a heated exchange between Kapil and Kirsten and the other players too got involved. "At that moment I felt it was an unsporting gesture," Kirsten said.

But the 58-year-old has moved on. "I don't hold any grudges. We made up over a drink," Kirsten said, smiling.
