"We haven't had the best record in Durban over the last few years and are looking forward to this opportunity to get it right. It had a lot to do with our adaptability on this surface and we have to ensure that there's no such problems this time around," Smith said.
The Proteas have lost the last four Test matches they have played here. The locals say that the new surface doesn't suit them, with which Smith partially agrees. "It's a surface that can change every day. Stats say that Day 2 is more difficult to bat on than Day 1... pretty similar to the Wanderers. But the overhead conditions can play a big role here in Kingsmead," he said, adding that there might be a bit of rain around that can help his seamers.
Morne Morkel's injury is a worry for him, but Vernon Philander's performance has delighted the South African skipper. He has climbed to No. 1 in the Test bowlers' rankings, and Smith feels Philander deserves every accolade that's being showered on him.
"He has been exceptional wherever he has played, be it England or the subcontinent. He has the right technique, right attitude and has been phenomenal for quite some time now."
The opening partnership, which had been a bit of a worry for the South Africans of late, came good at Wanderers. "From my perspective, it's great to see Alviro (Petersen) play well. It's 20-odd Test matches we've been together now and we'd love to carry on. The opening partnership is a crucial factor in the success of any team," Smith said, praising Peterson's 76 in the second innings at Wanderers.
