WI series: Zaheer snubbed, Ishant picked

NEW DELHI: Zaheer Khan failed to make the cut, Harbhajan Singh was dropped and Rohit Sharma was selected in the squad for the two-Test series against the West Indies which will be Sachin Tendulkar's last in international cricket.

Also named were bowlers Shami Ahmed, Amit Mishra and Umesh Yadav.

Alongwith Harbhajan, pacer Ashok Dinda was dropped from the squad that won 4-0 against Australia earlier this year, while Ravindra Jadeja was rested because of a shoulder strain.

The middle-order looks transformed and settled but not the opening combination because the in-form Shikhar Dhawan is still in search for adequate choices.

Murali Vijay, who opened with Dhawan against Australia and scored two massive centuries has done little wrong to lose out.

Zaheer Khan was snubbed even though India need to bolster their pace attack. Umesh Yadav may be glad he is back after wondering why he was ignored for the one-day series against Australia.

Ashok Dinda was in the squad when India last played a Test series at home, but carried drinks. And Ishant Sharma, who was impressive then, has since been clobbered to a degree, but still made the cut.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the only certainty from the team that last played a Test.

Squad: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, Shami Ahmed, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma.
