Whiteman smashed 6 boundaries and a couple of scintillating sixes to lead the Perth Scorchers to 149/6 after the Australian side stumbled mid-innings by losing quick wickets.
Openers Ashton Agar and Simon Katich got the Scorchers off to a good start when they put up a steady 55-run partnership.
However, the glory was short-lived when Mumbai Indians spinner Pragyan Ojha got the better of both Agar's (35) and Katich's (13) stumps in one over.
Whiteman and Hilton Cartwright then gave the Scorchers some respite when they stitched a swift 58-run partnership for the third wicket before Nathan Coulter-Nile dismissed Cartwright (28) and new batsman Ashton Turner in successive deliveries.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl against Perth Scorchers.
Million-dollar man Glenn Maxwell comes in for Mitchell Johnson in the Mumbai side, while Brad Hogg returns to the XI for Scorchers.
