'BCCI is adopting double standards'

Ravi Sawani has met Ajit Chandila, one of the accused in the IPL spot-fixing scandal. He interrogated the former Rajasthan Royals player in New Delhi for about three hours on Wednesday. The player's lawyer has slammed the procedure of inquiry by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), calling it unfair.

"They have interrogated the player without a showcause notice. The inquiry process, adopted by the BCCI, is wrong. Without evidence they are declaring the players guilty," Rakesh Kumar, Chandila's lawyer, told Mirror.

Explaining his point, Kumar has said the BCCI is adopting double standards. "They've declared Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and others not guilty in the inquiry conducted by two judges. Thankfully, that report was stayed by the Supreme Court. But they have declared S Sreesanth and other players guilty and announced bans against them. It is nothing but double standards. They are making players the scapegoats," Kumar said.

During the interrogation with the head of BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), Chandila has sought some time to give a written submission. He has told Sawani that the written submission will be submitted within a week. "We've requested Sawani to submit his report to the BCCI after receiving our written submission. We'll need about a week's time to do that," Kumar said.

Life ban likely

Chandila is the only player, named by Delhi police in the spot-fixing scandal, who has not been heard by the BCCI's disciplinary committee. After Sawani's report, the BCCI's disciplinary committee will call him for a hearing before announcing its verdict. Going by the previous sentences, he could be slapped with life ban.

Chandila's RR teammates Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, Siddharth Trivedi and Amit Singh were handed sentences ranging from life ban to one-year suspension last month. Mumbai's Harmeet Singh was given a clean chit.
