The tie ended in a tie after both sides scored 167 each. The Super Over also ended in a tie as both teams got 13 each.
Since Otago hit 12 boundaries in the match, one more than their opponents, they were declared the winner.
Right through the qualifiers, Otago's top order has carried them through with their captain Brenden McCullum leading the way.
But unlike previous matches, they found the going tough against the Lions on Sunday. It was left to James Neesham to prop up the innings with an unbeaten 52.
Earlier, wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton De Kock held centrestage for Lions, scoring an unbeaten 109, the highest for the South African side.
The hard-hitting batsman broke the spirit of the rival bowlers with his ruthless batting display to propel his team to 167 for four.
Neither spin nor speed provided any challenge to him as he decorated the 60-ball knock with 10 boundaries and five sixes.
After winning the toss, Otago Volts decided to field first with a clear intention to keep the opposition under a tight leash.
Their ploy looked like working as openers De Kock and Rassie Van Der Dussen found it tough to hit the big shots.
De Kock, however, found his touch in the second half of the innings to break the shackles. He started firing on all cylinders after settling down.
The Lions opener was a picture of grace and confidence as he made the attack look quite ordinary. However, the knock went in vain.
