Blue are Challenger Trophy champions

INDORE: Delhi's big guns failed to fire when it mattered the most. Gautam Gambhir, Unmukt Chand and Virender Sehwag not only hurt their team's cause but also failed to shine one final time before the selectors sit down on Monday to pick the Indian team for the seven-match one-day international series against Australia.

Delhi, who were set a challenging target of 275 by India Blue in the Challenger Trophy final, required the trio to get into the act.

The stage was set for them on a flat track and a near full house backing them at the Holkar stadium.

But they failed miserably and the fate of the final was decided in the first 10 overs itself as Delhi by then had lost their top four batsmen with not even 50 on the board.

There were half-centuries by Milind Kumar and Puneet Bisht, but that was not enough as Delhi fell short by 50 runs to hand over the trophy to India Blue.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's opening spell in which he accounted for Gambhir and Chand proved crucial and the medium-pacer was named Man of the Match.

His new ball partner Vinay Kumar too was impressive as he castled a dangerous Sehwag cheaply. If that was not enough, he ran Kolhi out with a fine effort on his follow-through.

He dived full length to his right and in one swift action threw down the stumps with Delhi skipper well short of the crease.

India Blue skipper Yuvraj Singh should be complimented for the decision to bat first as in the earlier matches the captain winning the toss had erred in inserting the opposition and were batted out of the game by rivals posting huge totals.

Manish Pandey's knock of 62 was the cornerstone of the Blue innings. Around him there were useful contributions by Piyush Chawla (42), Ankit Bawne (37), Naman Ohja (33) and Yuvi himself (29).

Little wonder than that after the match, Yuvi praised the team effort as they emerged the champions winning all their three matches.

Delhi bowlers did well to keep the Blue total under the 300-mark, after that landmark was crossed by the teams batting first in the earlier three matches. But they were let down big time by their own batsmen, who had it in them to attaining the target.

Brief scores:

India Blue: 274 for 9 (Pandey 62, Awana 4-39, Bhatia 4-59) beat Delhi: 224 (Milind 54, Bisht 54*, Bhuvneshwar 4-39) by 50 runs
