Windies defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets


NEW DELHI: Chris Gayle hit a magnificent century as the West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the Tri-series opener at Sabina Park in Kingston on Friday.

The West Indies chased down the 209-run target in 37.5 overs with Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo taking the team to victory.


Gayle was dismissed after putting the West Indies on the threshold of an emphatic victory.


Gayle's knock ended when Ajantha Mendis had him caught by Dinesh Chandimal at square leg.


Gayle's 109-run knock came off 100 balls and was studded with nine fours and seven sixes.


Gayle reached his third century at Sabina Park with the help of six sixes and nine fours.


Gayle reached his fifty off 47 balls.


The West Indies lost their first wicket in the 21st over when Rangana Herath had Johnson Charles caught by Mahela Jayawardene at long-on. Charles hit 2 sixes and a four in his 58-ball 29.


Openers Gayle and Charles brought up the West Indies fifty in the eleventh over.


Earlier, Sunil Narine took four wickets and Ravi Rampaul scalped three as the West Indies bowled out Sri Lanka for 208 runs in 48.3 overs.


Rampaul claimed his third victim in the form of Rangana Herath (4), giving Sri Lanka 8th blow at the score of 190 in the 45th over.


Invited to bat, openers Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga got Sri Lanka off to a steady start and guided the side past 50 in ten overs.


Dwayne Bravo got Sri Lankan opener Tharanga caught behind after a solid 62-run stand for the first wicket.


Skipper Bravo struck in the 14th over, removing Tharanga after his 25-run knock off 43 balls.


Mahela Jayawardene then struck an impresive half-ton giving sri Lanak hope. However,spinner Sunil Narine gave Sri Lanka second blow by scalping Jayawardene just after he reached his fifty.


Jaya edged Narine to wicket keeper Denesh Ramadin after scoring 52 in as many balls. His brisk knock was studded with seven boundaries.


After getting rid of Jayawardene, Narine struck again to dismiss Kumar Sangakkara to reduce Sri Lanka to 104/3 in the tri-series opener.


On the final delivery of the 22nd over, Sangakkara pushed Narine's flighted delivery straight to Kieron Pollard at extra cover after making 17 off 23 balls.


Spinner Marlon Samuels got Dinesh Chandimal caught by Dwayne Bravo to inflict fourth blow on Sri Lanka at the score of 140 in the 32nd over.


Chandimal gave an easy catch to Bravo at mid-wicket after scoring 21 off 37 balls.


Medium pacer Ravi Rampaul's double blow then reduced Sri Lanka to 159/6 in the 38th over. Rampaul first dismissed Lahiru Thirimanne (6) and then sent back Nuwan Kulasekara (2) in consecutive overs.


Spinner Sunil Narine claimed his third victim in the form of Jeevan Mednis and gave Sri Lanka seventh blow at the score of 176 in the 42nd over. Mendis was caught by Marlon Samuels at deep square leg after scoring 5.
