Sharma smashed Sammy to long on, only to be caught by Johnson Charles. His 60-run knock came off 89 deliveries and was studded with four boundaries and a six.
His half-ton came soon after the dismissal of Dinesh Karthik with whom he shared a steady 59-run stand for the third wicket.
Marlon Samuels gave India third blow just before they crossed 100-mark by sending back Dinesh Karthik (23). Samuels caught and bowled Karthik to reduce India to 98/3 in the 26th over.
Earlier, West Indies bowlers kept India in check after claiming two early wickets. After being invited to bat, India got off to a decent start.
However, Kemar Roach spoiled India's start by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan in the fifth over with 25 runs on board.
Dhawan hit Roach's good length straight that touched the bowlers right hand and popped in the air before he recovered quickly to complete the catch.
Dhawan scored 11 and shared 25-run stand with Rohit Sharma for the first wicket.
Darren Sammy then struck in the tenth over by sending back Virat Kohli at the score of 39. Kohli made just 11 in 21 balls before getting caught by Chris Gayle brilliantly at slip.
West Indies dropped Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul because of injury.
