Although he was praised by one and all and was looked at as one of the future stars, his first class career appeared to be a non-starter. He thought of migrating to other states, but Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials were successful in persuading his parents and kept him back.
He completed his move to the Central Zone team earlier this year after securing a No Objection Certificate from the MCA and now when he was all set to resume his first class career with Vidarbha in the forthcoming Ranji Trophy, Harmeet's name in the spot-fixing scandal could land him in trouble again.
Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) is monitoring things closely. Although they haven't made up their mind, they are cautious.
"We've come to know about this episode through the media. We have agreed to play him in principle, there's no official contract till now. Now we want to screen him thoroughly and make sure he is not involved in any wrongdoing. Let's see what happens," VCA president Prakash Dixit told TOI on Sunday.
With the arrest of bookie Jitender Jain, alias Jeetu, Harmeet's name too has cropped up in the spot-fixing scandal. Harmeet had met the bookies willingly, but the Delhi police declined to say if the 20-year-old knew what the deal would entail.
Jain had met him around two months before the start of IPL 6 in April, but the latter's Dubai-based handlers decided that Harmeet was "too young" to carry out their bidding. Police have not ruled out summoning Harmeet for interrogation, since it is not clear why he had agreed to meet Jain, who has been involved in betting for the past 10 years.
Harmeet came to Nagpur to play in the three-day MN Dorairajan Trophy, a pre-season tournament in Nagpur. He was supposed to play third-round matches for VCA XI starting this week. However, it looking unlikely as he may be questioned about his involvement.
