Trott was trapped leg before by Herath at the score of 218 just after Root completed his half-ton in 43 deliveries.
Root joined Trott after the loss of Alastair Cook in the 29th over at the score of 131. Trott reached his half-ton in 60 balls.
Rangana Herath got rid of England skipper Cook (59) after a solid 83-run stand for the second wicket with Trott.
In the 29th over, Herath trapped Cook leg before. But the England skipper referred the decision to third umpire only to return disappointed at the score of 131. Cook's 85-ball-59 were studded with six boundaries.
He reached his fifty in 72 balls, accelerating England's scoring rate after a slow start.
Shaminda Eranga gave England first blow by dismissing Ian Bell in the 12th over at the score of 48.
Eranga got Bell caught by Kusal Perera at mid-wicket after his 20-run knock off 37 balls.
Cook and Bell got England off to a slow start as the hosts scored just 38 runs in 10 overs after beings asked to bat.
Though Sri Lanka bowlers failed to get any early breakthrough, they didn't concede too many runs in the first powerplay.
Sri Lanka will look for a vastly improved batting performance against hosts England as they try to stay afloat in the Champions Trophy.
