'Teams, BCCI should be on same page'

NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket board's (BCCI) interim president Jagmohan Dalmiya's proposals for cleaning up IPL have got the teams thinking. The team owners know that the market forces are not exactly with the IPL and such remedial steps could help the T20 league flourish in the years to come but they have certain proposals of their own which they want to bring to the notice of the league's governing council.

"A huge amount of money at stake and we want the league to continue. We are okay with every possible reform as long as the league doesn't get affected. But it's a two-way traffic. You can't blame the team owners for what has happened in IPL 6. BCCI should also be held accountable," a team official said on Tuesday.

Some team officials have suggested bringing in 'flying anti-corruption squads', which can make random checks in players' room. Some even suggested monitoring of room service in team hotels to "keep the bookies at bay".

"They want the team owners to stay away from the dug-out. Why then are the office bearers of different state cricket associations sitting in players' dug-out?" questioned a team official. "The real power lies with the board and the time has come to give the team owners more power to keep a tab on the players. It is all about collective responsibility."

Some teams are not happy with the ambiguity over continuing with strategic time-outs. There is a feeling in the board these strategic timeouts can lead to spot-fixing. However, the teams feel these time-outs are important commercially as they add significantly to the income of the teams from the central revenue.

With eight teams on board and one or two more to come into the league, the board plans to sit with the broadcasters and team owners before taking things forward. "If timeouts affect the real aspect of the game in the process of cleaning it up, the board will take note of it," a top BCCI official told TOI.

According to sources, some of the working committee members have also suggested giving a free-hand to anti-corruption units and giving them the authority to seek call details of any owner, official, player or support staff. The board feels that the franchisee should monitor players through the year.

"Once the tournament is over, there is no touch base. The team should be in touch with its players throughout the year," said a BCCI official. "The teams should take special care of those who are paid less than the other big international players," he added.

The board is also not too happy with most teams having post-match parties despite BCCI's warning and it feels a blanket ban on these gatherings is a must now. However, the teams are insisting that that these "meet and greet ceremonies" are imposed on them by the sponsors. "If you enforce too many restrictions, the sponsors won't come in," said an official.
