A solid 93-run opening stand between Sachin Tendulkar and Dwayne Smith and late flourish by Dinesh Karthik steered Mumbai Indians to 170/6.
After the fall of openers, Kolkata made scoring difficult for Mumbai with their disciplined attack. However, Karthik played sensibly to take his side to a sizeable total. The right-hander scored unbeaten 34 off 18 balls with the help of two sixes and three boundaries.
After opting to bat, Mumbai started slowly as they were just 13 in first three overs. But Tendulkar soon gave his side the momentum by pulling off 20 runs of a McLaren's over.
Both openers then kept Kolkata at bay and shared 93-run stand for the first wicket. However, Kolkata bounced back with double blow by spinners Iqbal Abdulla and Rajat Bhatia.
Abdulla got rid of Dwayne Smith (47) while Bhatia bowled out Sachin Tendulkar (48).
Bhatia struck in the 13th over to give Kolkata first breakthrough by dismissing Tendulkar after his 28-ball knock, studded with eight boundaries.
In the next over Smith was caught by McLaren off Iqbal at the score of 99.
Rohit Sharma (16), Kieron Pollard (4), Ambati Rayudu (0) and Harbhajan Singh (0) then fell in quick succession.
Mumbai have replaced injured Pawan Suyal with Abu Nechim. The visitors have made two changes, bringing in paceman Ryan McLaren in place of spinner Sachithra Senanayake and replacing Sumit Narwal with Laxmipati Balaji.
