Rajasthan bowled tightly in the death overs as despite a commanding show by the top order, Mumbai were restricted to 166/8. Mumbai scored 35 runs in last five overs and the cost of five wickets.
Tare slammed a brilliant 59 off just 37 balls and shared a gritty 76-run stand for the second wicket after the loss of fellow opener Glenn Maxwell, who gave Mumbai a flying start.
Maxwell scored 23 off 17 balls with the help of three sixes before getting trapped leg before by Shane Watson when the scorecard read 25.
Tare then dominated Rajasthan attack with big hits. The newcomer, well supported by Dinesh Karthik, guided Mumbai past 100 in 11 overs.
Rajasthan made a brief comeback with quick wickets of Karthik and Tare.
Pravin Tambe and Kevon Cooper removed Dinesh Karthik and Aditya Tare respectively to reduce Mumbai Indians to 108/3.
Rohit Sharma was the fourth man to fall. James Faulkner scalps skipper Rohit Sharma in the 16th over at the score of 138. He scored 14 and shared 30-run stand with Kieron Pollard.
Pollard soon followed Sharma.
Mumbai dropped an injured Sachin Tendulkar and brought in Aditya Tare. Dwayne Smith's been rested too, giving Glenn Maxwell a second chance.
The winner of this contest will be assured of not just the playoff berth, they will also get the privilege of finishing in the top two and earning themselves the cushion of getting two cracks to contest the final.
On the face of it, it's a battle between a team that loves playing at home (MI are unbeaten in seven games at Wankhede this season) and another (Royals have lost four of their six away games) that doesn't like travelling.
