"The last three games can be a learning process. We want to end on a winning note. It will help everyone: individuals, the team, the owners and all those who have put in so much energy throughout the season," said Pune Warriors team director and ex-Test player Deep Dasgupta on the eve of the clash against Delhi Daredevils.
It will be the final league engagement for both sides. Both have won just three games and the outcome will decide the basement position. So, there's something to play for after all!
But if failure is a stepping stone to success, then Pune should be a stronger squad, having finished last in the two seasons they have been part of the T20 league so far!
There was another notable remark from Dasgupta, who said: "Ashok Dinda hasn't got his line right, but I still think he is one of the best death bowlers in the country." The West Bengal player is the only one in the team to aggregate more than 400 runs. To be precise, he has given away 444 runs from 45 overs in 12 outings, although he is the team's leading wicket-taker with 14 scalps.
Meanwhile, Daredevils, who topped the league tables last season, have gone from bad to worse. Daredevils' Karnataka batsman CM Gautham was willing to own up too. "The team management has been motivating us. You can't blame them. At the end of the day, it's the players who are out on the field. We lost five-six close games, we didn't finish them off. But our approach and commitment will be the same."
For the Bangalorean, it will be a forgettable ending to an otherwise memorable season. The 27-year-old had his best first-class season in his career so far, scoring 943 runs including two double hundreds at an average of 117.87. One of the doubles came at the same venue, in a Ranji Trophy league game against Maharashtra.
