BCCI to curb player liberties during CT

NEW DELHI: Rattled by the spot-fixing allegations, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has turned to Odisha Cricket Association's Ranjib Biswal to ensure players maintain discipline and abide by strict rules of behavior during the Champions Trophy.

Biswal, a former 'permanent manager' of the Indian team who toured with the players for one-and-a-half years till the 2011 World Cup, has been recalled to ensure there is no unwanted attention on MS Dhoni and Co during the tournament.

Some stringent rules for players include a ban on late-night parties and a strict curfew in the late hours. Players will not be permitted to leave their hotel without prior permission from Biswal, even if they are going out for dinner.

No phone calls from outside will be allowed and the media can't access players without taking prior permission. Mobile phone numbers will be under constant surveillance from concerned authorities and players will not be permitted to accept gifts.

"These codes were always there. But after the 2011 World Cup win, not everyone in the team religiously followed these codes. There was a casual approach. Biswal gives an honest report to the board and is quite sincere.

He is not awestruck by the presence of big cricketers," a source told TOI.

Sources said under-fire BCCI chief N Srinivasan called up Biswal after the spot-fixing scandal broke and asked him to accompany the team to England for the Champions Trophy and the subsequent tri-series in the West Indies.

Biswal agreed but added that won't be accompanying the team to the Caribbean.

Biswal was the manager when the team was involved in a brawl with some NRIs in a pub in St Lucia during the 2010 World T20 in the West Indies.

He submitted a strong report on the behavior of some players, following which some strict codes were imposed on the players. Then-BCCI president Shashank Manohar had made Biswal the team manager till the 2011 World Cup.

Players will not be permitted to leave their hotel without prior permission from Biswal, even if they are going out for dinner. No phone calls from outside will be allowed.
