Despite losing explosive opener Chris Gayle early after being invited to bat, Bangalore didn't allow hosts to rule and went on scoring runs at brisk rate.
Mayank Agarwal (24) and Kohli took Bangalore past 50 in eight overs. In the ninth over R Ashwin struck to give Bangalore second blow by sending back Agarwal.
Dhoni was quick to stump Agarwal (25) after his 45-run stand with Virat Kohli for the second wicket.
Kohli and de Villiers then powered their side with a solid 82-run stand between them. Kohli scored a gritty 58 off 47 balls before becoming second victim of Chris Morris, who earlier scalped Chris Gayle, in the 17th over.
In the same over Morris removed Daniel Christian to help Chennai fight back.
However, de Villiers demolished Chennai attack in the death overs to take his side to a challenging total. He pulled off 20 runs off the 19th over.
Bangalore have made three changes to their side, bringing in Ravi Rampaul, Dan Christian and left-arm spinner Syed Mohammad in place of Muttiah Muralitharan, Moises Henriques and Lokesh Rahul.
For Chennai, Mohit Sharma replaced Ankit Rajput in the playing XI.
Both sides come into their 'Super Saturday' clash following convincing wins and the focus will be on building momentum in these early stages of the tournament.
RCB have won their last two games and will be looking to maintain that run while CSK, keen to shed their slow starters tag after losing their opening game, bounced back with a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab.
