Shah Rukh, in association with Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, bought the franchise for $75.09 million in 2008. But with the team not living up to expectations - it failed to reach the semifinals in the first four years - the franchise's valuation dropped. In 2011, the brand value of the team was estimated at $57.5 million as it ranked third among ten IPL units. However, after the IPL triumph in 2012, sources say KKR management is now bullish and is looking for at least $40 million for the 20 per cent stake.
In the past, Shah Rukh has vehemently denied any news regarding sell of team stakes. The Indian cricket board too is yet to receive any formal request to this effect from KKR owners. But sources stressed, "Shah Rukh is looking for buyers to offload stakes if he gets a good deal." The Bollywood icon and his partners would, however, retain control of the team.
According to IPL rules, teams can sell stakes but only after BCCI okays the deal.
