Watson, who had a fallout with the team management and left the team in a huff in the wake of the unsavoury 'HomeworkGate' saga, was present in Australia for the birth of his first child but has now boarded the flight for India ahead of the fourth Test.
Clarke made it clear that if his bad back did not show dramatic improvement, Watson would take over leadership duties. "If I am unavailable due to my fitness, I don't know.. I haven't spoken to the selectors, but I would imagine that Watto will be the captain, that's for sure," Clarke said.
"My fingers are crossed I will be doing everything I can to give myself the best chance. I guess I am always pretty positive, touchwood I haven't missed a Test match due to injury so far in my career and I wouldn't like this to be my first one. If I can't perform at my best, if I feel I am going to let the team down, I won't be taking the field," added.
The present scenario is a win-win situation for Watson, who will be thanking his stars as there might just be a complete u-turn in his fortunes come the Delhi Test.
'Committed to Tests'
Also on Monday, Watson made peace with Cricket Australia's high-performance manager Pat Howard and declared his commitment to Tests. "I have had a number of chats with Pat Howard over the last week and we are both now on the same page and are really looking forward to working together to get Australia to be the best team in the world," Watson said before boarding the flight back to India.
"I've a burning ambition to be an Australian Test player for as long as I can be and help Australia win those big Test series as well as big ICC tournaments," he said. "I'm looking forward to getting around the boys again and concentrating on moving forward. I'm committed to the team."
