Policemen love game, happy with ban

CHENNAI: Many policemen in this city are big cricket fans, but they're not disappointed that some key Indian Premier League matches will not be held in the city.

Already short-staffed and overworked due to protests by students on the Sri Lankan issue, Chennai police was relieved when the state government announced that no IPL matches featuring Lankan players would be allowed in the city.

A senior officer said policemen have had to sweat it out because of the protests across the city after UK's Channel 4 last month released video footage allegedly showing Prabhakaran's son Balachandran being killed by Sri Lankan forces.

The police had to deal with problems during the first Test against Australia in Chennai, with several groups condemning the decision to name Sri Lankan umpire Kumar Dharmasena for the game.

"Policemen at the stadium denied entry to cricket fans who were wearing black T-shirts and black caps. We were concerned that people would enter the stadium as spectators and hold protests inside," a police officer said.

"The policemen did well to keep the recent protests from getting out of hand," former DGP A X Alexander said.
