India resume first innings after lunch

NEW DELHI: Openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan resumed India's first innings after lunch on the third day of the third Test against Australia at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Saturday.

Scorecard

Vijay and Dhawan safely played out the one over before lunch to take India to 3/0.

India bowled out Australia for 408 runs in their first innings.

Australia scored at a brisk rate as Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc took the attack to the opposition.

A 97-run partnership between Smith and Starc for the eighth wicket and then a 51-run stand by Starc and Nathan Lyon for the ninth wicket might just hurt India little bit.

The Australian innings ended when R Ashwin trapped Xavier Doherty plumb in front of the wicket.

Starc hit a career-best 99 before edging a Ishant Sharma delivery to Indian captain and keeper MS Dhoni.

Ishant bowled a full delivery outside off, Starc chased it and only got a nick behind for Dhoni to dive to his left and catch it as Starc missed what could have been a well-deserved century.

Smith hit 92 before he was stumped by Indian captain MS Dhoni off Pragyan Ojha.

Ojha bowled a loopy delivery on the middle, Smith was drawn forward to play, the ball ripped and gripped off the surface to turn away. Smith's back foot did not stay in and Dhoni was sharp as usual behind to whip the bails off in a flash. No third umpire was needed as the square leg umpire raised the finger.

The day's play started with Smith and Starc resuming Australia's first innings.

On Day 2, the Indians created many chances and spurned many, as Australia finished on 273/7.
