Prompt was his reply and it was pretty tongue and cheek, 'Kaun pressure mein hoga, aap humari baat kar rahe hain.' Then laughing it off, Dhawan said that he was elated to just play for the Indian team.
But this showed the confidence of the player. He is not in awe of reputation, rather has the spunk to say that he can fill those boots.
"I have performed really well in domestic cricket and I am not feeling any pressure. Obviously, there is a bit of nerves, but it's the same with everyone," said Dhawan in the pre-match press conference. Adding, "I'll be giving my 100 percent, come what may."
The southpaw broke into the Test side on the back of some strong showing in the domestic season. However, he could not get a chance to play in the first two Tests played in Chennai and Hyderabad. Now, he is all set to open with Murali Vijay.
Dhawan hoped his opening partnership with Vijay would be fruitful for the national side and said that the two would like to emulate the success of Gambhir and Sehwag.
"Both Viru bhai (Sehwag) and Gauti (Gambhir) have done well over a long period of time. I hope we also do as good as them in the future," said the 27-year-old. "Coordination ... things like running between the wickets ... with Vijay should not be a problem at all.
I have played with him in the Irani Cup and we understand each other well," he added.
The Delhi opener was given the news of his debut by coach Duncan Fletcher and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and said that he tried to learn as much as possible from Sehwag, when he was part of the team.
"In the last two games Viru paaji played, I have spoken to him, tried to learn from him," Dhawan added.
