How do you react to the issue over Lankan cricketer's participation in Chennai matches?
It is quite unfortunate. You can't do much when such things happen. I am sure the BCCI and the government are looking into it and they will handle it in the best possible way. There are a few teams which have some good Sri Lankan players and they might have to change their strategies for the games in Chennai. Fortunately, we Royals have just one Sri Lanka in Kushal Perera and we do have replacements for him, in case we need to take such a call.
But, don't you think some teams might be at a disadvantage?
All teams have to adhere by this rule and it is the same situation for everyone in the IPL. Some teams have Sri Lankans as captains and as I said, they might just have to change their strategies a little bit.
Your thoughts about Jesse Ryder...
It was a very sad incident to have happened and my thoughts are with him. I do hope he recovers fast. He is a fantastic cricketer and I have seen him quite closely. He got a double hundred against us and apart from that, there are some great innings that he has played.
Ryder has at times reacted to comments from fans...
There are times when people do have a go at you, particularly at public places. It is just not fair. But then, that's the way it is. When it is alcohol-induced, people tend to lose their inhibition and do or say things that they normally would not. Sometimes things tend to get out of hands.
Have you ever felt the urge to react to provocation?
Fortunately, I have never been in such situations.
A word about the Indian team: It seems to have a settled look now.
Oh yes, the boys are doing really well. They had a very good series against Australia. The youngsters have stepped up magnificently. I was particularly impressed by the way the team bounced back, after the defeats in Australia and against England. They have showed a lot of character and it is always good to see them winning. A few overseas series are coming up and they will be making these trips with a lot of confidence.
Are you happy with the Royals squad?
I am quite happy with the team we have this time. We needed to get certain kind of players to fill up some slots and we have been able to do that. This time, we will also have Shane Watson with us from the second game onwards. That is a great advantage. Watson brings a lot of quality to the team. Last year, we missed him for the first 8-9 games. This time, we are lucky that way. If we can play to our potential, we should be able to do pretty well.
Will you play all the matches?
Yes, that is the idea. I am ready to play all the matches, but then we will take a call as the tournament progresses. I have been playing some cricket for the past two months. I have been at the nets and am also working on my fitness. I might open the innings with Ajinkya Rahane, but this time we have an option in Watson too. He can give us a great start.
Do your sons play cricket?
The younger one is just three. The elder one is seven and he does enjoy playing cricket. This is the age when they should enjoy whatever games they play. They will be here in Jaipur to watch the ties.
So, Does the elder one ask you why you don't play like Chris Gayle?
Ha ha, yes, he does like to see those big shots. It is always that way with the kids, isn't it?
