TV reports are that all the players were asked to give a presentation to the coach Mickey Arthur consisting of their inputs regarding Australia's fightback against the Test series against India.
But the four players failed to do so and henceforth the necessary action was taken.
Watson and Pattinson were part of the Australian playing XI in the first two Tests in Chennai and Hyderabad both of which the visitors lost.
Australia have 16 players in their Test squad, and Brad Haddin is set to fly over to India as cover for the injured wicket-keeper Matthew Wade.
The decision to penalise the four players means Australia will only have, at most, 13 players to choose for the third Test that begins on March 14 in Mohali.
