Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has praised Rohit Sharma's innings in the Indian Premier League opener at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. Rohit missed a well-deserved century by two runs and his innings went in vain as defending champions KKR won by seven wickets. But Gambhir praised the unbeaten innings that came off 65 balls and laced with some exquisite strokes.(Rohit Misses Ton by Whisker)

Rohit's innings was the centerpiece of Mumbai's innings that collapsed to 37 for three wickets in the sixth over. The Indian opener slammed 12 fours and four sixes on a slow batting wicket. Gambhir was full of praise.('Don't Mind Missing Ton')

"Rohit Sharma was brilliant for Mumbai. He moved like a Rolls Royce, maneuvering the gaps on a busy road effortlessly," Gambhir wrote in his column.

Gambhir, who himself setup Kolkata's run-chase with a 43-ball 57, wrote: "A writer once beautifully summarised the elegance quotient in the batting of former West Indian great Carl Hooper. He wrote: "If batting was a beauty contest, Hooper would be Miss World." Let's say Rohit can easily be Miss India."(Eden Kind to Rohit, Kinder to Morkel)

The former Indian opener and Delhi's Ranji captain, Gambhir broke his bat while chasing Mumbai's 168 at the Eden Gardens. It won him more attention in social media than his fifty.(Yuvraj Takes a Dig at Gambhir)

Gambhir feels breaking a bat (like breaking glass) is a lucky omen and called it a welcome "wardrobe malfunction." Gambhir had broken his bat in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. He had scored 97 in that match and India won the Cup of Cups at the Wankhede Stadium.

"My bat sponsor sitting in Chennai would want to kill me for saying this but I won't mind breaking 15 more bats to win this year's IPL," Gambhir said tongue-in-cheek. KKR have made the right start and in a long tournament, Gambhir's bat must do the talking all the way, broken or intact!
