This edition of the Indian Premier League seems to be in the grips of young men who will probably play for the country very soon. If Deepak Hooda is grabbing headlines for Rajasthan Royals, Mayank Agarwal is not far away. The 24-year-old Agarwal steered Delhi Daredevils to their first win in 12 games and a World Cup-winning star can't stop raving about it.(Match Report| Scorecard|Highlights)
Agarwal (68 off 48 balls) posted his highest score in the IPL -- his second fifty -- the first being 64 not out off 30 balls for Bangalore versus Mumbai at Bangalore on May 14, 2012. Agarwal has recorded a hundred and seven fifties in Twenty20.(Duminy All Praise for Yuvraj)
Wednesday's knock could not have been more timely. Chasing 166 for a win versus Kings XI in Pune, the Bangalore born former India under-19 batsman, scored freely even after Delhi Daredevils lost two wickets for 53 in the eighth over.
If the opener was looking for inspiration, there could not have been a better man than Yuvraj Singh, who walked in at No. 4. Scoring off a bowler like Mitchell Johnson is no easy job. Agarwal hit seven fours and two sixes in his innings.
Agarwal and Yuvraj produced a match-winning 106 runs off 11 overs, with the 2011 World Cup champion playing the leading role, scoring 55 of those crucial runs for the third wicket.
Yuvraj was all praise for Agarwal.
"I think Mayank was brilliant. He is a great talent. I have been talking to him from the start of the IPL and he played really well in the last game. He played really well in this game too; he is maturing and I hope he plays for India soon," Yuvraj was quoted in iplT20.com.
Yuvraj said, "We were talking about what the wicket is like and how we are going to play certain kind of bowlers and it worked well for us. We had good communication over there. We needed one good partnership to get the game to the end and we got it."
"The conversation between Yuvi paa and me initially was to get a partnership together. The other thing was to decide who we are going to take on and which bowler I could take on and which bowler he was targeting, and how we are going to pace the innings and what run rate we are going to be at," Agarwal said.
Finally, everything worked out fine for the Delhi Daredevils as they won with a ball remaining.
