The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) congratulated MS Dhoni and his team for an 'outstanding effort' in World Cup 2015. In a media release on Friday, a day after India lost to four-time champions Australia in the Sydney semifinal, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya praised the skills shown by the defending champions through the course of the tournament.

India registered seven wins on-the-trot before losing to Australia by 95 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Their efforts were highly praised by BCCI. (Also read: No Asian Team in World Cup final for first time since 1987 )

"I congratulate the entire Indian cricket team for having played some outstanding cricket in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015," said Dalmiya. "They have indeed displayed some admirable skills while playing the game in its true spirit, and thereby, bringing joy to millions of cricket fans." (Also read: Indian cheers silenced in Sydney )

Dalmiya also highlighted that despite the eventual loss, there were many reasons to celebrate the cricket put on display by the Men in Blue.

"In spite of the disappointment due to the loss in the semi-final, the fact that the impending generation has showed the desired potential to take Indian cricket to greater heights is quite gratifying," said Dalmiya.

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur also wished the team and went a step further to thank fans for their unwavering support.

"I take this opportunity to thank all our fans across the world and especially those who were present for the semi-final and supported Team India," said Thakur.

Newly-elected Thakur had earlier said that he wishes to clean up BCCI's image in the country, tarnished by charges of corruption, conflict of interest and dictatorial leadership.
