Sharad Pawar has decided to contest the Board of Control for Cricket in India elections. He is currently the president of Mumbai Cricket Association. Pawar was BCCI president from 2005 to 2008. The Member of Parliament has also been the president of International Cricket Council from 2010 to 2012. (Sharad Pawar, Jagmohan Dalmiya urged to take over BCCI mantle)

The BCCI elections have been postponed twice due to the Supreme Court hearing of the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. On January 22, the Supreme Court ordered that BCCI elections should be held within the next six weeks. With N. Srinivasan's candidature looking increasing doubtful due to his conflict of interest issues in Indian cricket, Pawar has emerged as a strong candidate.

This is the East Zone's turn to nominate a president. For Pawar to win, he must secure the votes of the majority of East Zone units of the BCCI. Earlier, most East Zone members had backed Srinivasan but the equations are fast changing. Pawar had also declined to contest since Srinivasan looked good to secure a second full term. But the Supreme Court order has upset Srinivasan's plans.
