Former India batsman and United Nations goodwill ambassador Sachin Tendulkar, met UN General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon in New Delhi during an event to mark the UN's 70th anniversary. Tendulkar was accompanied by UNICEF national ambassador Sharmila Tagore, Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi and actor-activist Nandita Das at an event called, 'The Future We Want'.

Tendulkar, who retired from international cricket after playing his 200th and final Test against the West Indies in Mumbai in 2013, drew special attention from the UN top boss at the glittering gathering.

"I have received a lot of applause in India. But this evening, I seem to be the least popular person on the stage. I am indeed honoured that such individuals are lending their names to the UN cause," Ban Ki-moon said, adding: "The god of cricket will now bat for the UN." Tendulkar was also in the news for adopting a village and made headlines when he chose charity work over a music launch in Mumbai. The former India captain announced a donation of Rs 10 lakh to sponsor a ventilator at the Nowrosjee Wadia hospital for children. However, Tendulkar's biggest dream after hammering bowlers the world over, is to ensure most villages in India have access to electricity.

Tendulkar broke several records as a cricketer and went on to become the first man to score a double hundred in ODIs and register 100 international tons. He also has the most runs in ODIs (18426) and Tests (15921).
