Skipper Abhinav Mukund led from the front with a patient century to help Tamil Nadu reach a strong position on the second day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh.
At stumps, Tamil Nadu were 360 for 7 in reply to Uttar Pradesh's first-innings score of 182 all out, a lead of 178 runs with three wickets remaining at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Baba Indrajith was batting on 77 and Malolan Rangarajan was giving him company on 16 at close of play.
Besides Mukund and Indrajith, Baba Aparajith contributed with a knock of 59 off 144 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.
Starting at an overnight score of 53 for 2 with Mukund (26) and Baba Aparajith (1) at the crease, the hosts have so far batted for 122 overs.
During his 277-ball innings, Mukund found the fence 11 times. By the end of day's play, Indrajith had hit eight boundaries while facing 118 balls.
Mukund and Aparajith added 127 runs for the third wicket, the highest so far in the match, while Indrajith and Rangarajan had stitched an unbroken partnership of 53 runs for the eighth wicket.
Slow left-arm spinner Ali Murtaza was the most impressive bowler for Uttar Pradesh, returning figures of 4 for 117 in 42 overs.
Chauhan half-century keeps J&K afloat
A gritty half-century from Ian Dev Singh Chauhan followed by some lower-order resistance helped Jammu & Kashmir share day two honours with Bengal.
In reply to Bengal's tall first innings score of 387 all out, Jammu & Kashmir ended the day at 183 for 5 as they need 54 more runs to avoid a follow-on.

Pandey approaches ton in Karnataka's strong reply
Manish Pandey (92 not out) remained on course for his 14th first class century as Karnataka came up with a splendid batting effort against Madhya Pradesh by ending the day two of their Ranji Trophy Group A contest at 214 for three.
Karnataka bowled out for Madhya Pradesh for 303, allowing the hosts to add only 33 runs to their overnight total 270 for seven as paceman Abhimanyu Mithun took all the remaining three wickets.
Karnataka batsmen were hardly troubled by the home bowlers even as openers Robin Uthappa (31) and Ravikumar Samarth (57) squandered good starts.
In the 43-run opening stand, Uthappa scored 31, which had four shots to the fence. His innings was cut short by Ankita Sharma, who trapped the shot-maker.
Bad weather plays spoilsport on day two
In New Delhi, Intermittent rain and bad light allowed only 11.5 overs on day two of the Ranji Trophy Group A match between Baroda and Railways here on Wednesday.
But it was enough for Railways to bowl out Baroda for 298 after they resumed at 271 for seven. Medium pacer Anureet Singh was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 58 runs in 30 overs.
Opener Kedar Devdhar (80) was the top-scorer of the innings lasting 102.5 overs. Overnight batsman Swapnil Singh remained unbeaten on 34. The play began at 11.30 local time but inclement weather kept the players indoors for most part of the day.
