Sunil Gavaskar will jointly-present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the former Test captain previously said that he had received no invite. The Australia versus India Test series - named after Gavaskar and Allan Border - has been won by the hosts and the trophy will be presented at the end of the Sydney Test. Australia won the first two Tests at Adelaide and Brisbane. India managed to draw the third at Melbourne.
Gavaskar, who is in Sydney commentating on the fourth and final Test at SCG, was quoted by media saying that Cricket Australia did not send him an invite.
"To be honest, I am disappointed," he said on Tuesday - the first day of the final Test. "In today's day and age all it takes is an email, maybe a month earlier, to check I'm going to be in Australia. I would love to have my good mate Allan Border there as well," Gavaskar said. The former India opener also said that while being invited would have been a good gesture, he has not been invited even in the past. "Of course it would be nice to be asked, but I'm not holding my breath," Gavaskar said. "It's not an issue for me because I'm here for a completely different reason and I wasn't asked in 2007-08 either."
While Cricket Australia has maintained that an invite was indeed sent earlier, the Board sent one again on Wednesday to be sure.
Border has also said that he is looking forward to joining Gavaskar in handing over the trophy. "I think it's all been sorted," the former Australian captain said. "As far as I'm aware, I'm coming down and I assume they have talked to Sunil."
India and Australia play a Test series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The last series was played in India in 2012-13 with the hosts winning 4-0.
