Vijay became the first Indian opener since Sunil Gavaskar in 1977 to score a century in Brisbane.

Vijay was troubled early on in the innings when the pace troika of Mitchell Johnson, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc bowled with good line and length. Vijay even got a reprieve on 36 when he was put down by Shaun Marsh at gully. However, the Indian opener settled in well since and held the innings together.

Even Michael Clarke praised Vijay's resolve and tweeted about his ability to leave deliveries bowled outside the off-stump.

Vijay, who scored 53 and 99 in India's 48-run defeat in the first Test in Adelaide last week, continued from where he left off and battled pace and steep bounce to take India to 98/1 at lunch.

India lost a couple of early wickets in the second session but Vijay kept going and reached his ton with back-to-back boundaries in the final session on Day 1.
