Alastair Cook-led England have lost four one-day international series in-a-row since the Champions Trophy last year. The team's declining form in the 50-over format has cast a shadow on Cook's leadership abilities ahead of 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

England currently trail Sri Lanka 4-2 in the ongoing seven-match series. In September, Cook's team had lost to India and Sri Lanka at home.

"Alastair has said clearly he is very keen to carry on, but also knows that that's not his decision," England coach Peter Moores said after the side's 90-run defeat on Saturday. "Nobody has got the guarantee of that. I hear people say someone's unsackable. That would be a ridiculous comment," Moores added. (Also Read: Sangakkara Fined for Dissent)

Cook has been named as captain in England's provisional 30-man squad for the World Cup. He, however, has made only 87 runs in his five innings in the ongoing series in Sri Lanka - an average of 17, with a highest score of 34. In his last 21 ODIs, the left-handed opener has scored 499 runs at an average of 24.95 - with only one half century. (Related: Team India's Security Increased Due to Sydney Hostage Crisis)

England's 15-man World Cup squad will be announced on January 7. The team will begin their campaign against four-time champions Australia in Melbourne on February 14.
