Port Elizabeth: Faf du Plessis' century and subsequent dismissal were the only highlights of the rain-hit second day of the second Test between South Africa and West Indies at St. George's Park with just six overs of play possible on Saturday.

South Africa added 19 runs to their overnight total for the loss of Du Plessis, closing on 289-3.

After early morning rain caused a delay of 90 minutes, Du Plessis made an eventful start to the day as he resumed on 99 not out.

The right-hander hit the first ball to the square-leg boundary to reach his fourth Test century, then feathered the next delivery from Jerome Taylor through to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin to depart for 103.

There was little action afterward, with Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers adding a further 15 runs before the rain returned to halt proceedings once more.

Although it eased up midway through the afternoon, this did not leave enough time for further play after the mop-up operation.

Amla was unbeaten on 23, while De Villiers was 9 not out.

South Africa leads the three-match series 1-0 after winning the first Test by an innings and 220 runs at Centurion.
