Rohit Sharma batted his way to the record books when he slammed 264 - the highest ODI individual score - against Sri Lanka on Wednesday. While fans at Eden Gardens and around the world stood up to applaud the historic knock, fellow and former cricketers took to Twitter to salute the batsman who made his comeback from injury after almost three months. The tributes on the micro-blogging site was led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni who himself is nursing an injury. When Rohit overtook Virender Sehwag's 219 to become the highest scorer in ODI history, Dhoni predicted that he would breach the 250-run mark as well. (Recap of Rohit Sharma's knock in pics )
Former India pacer Zaheer Khan - who has played several international matches with Rohit - wished his Mumbai teammate for his sensational batting.
Even spinner Pragyan Ojha was in awe of the sheer batting havoc wreaked by Rohit and called him the 'Hit man of Indian cricket.'
Rohit - dropped on 4 early in the innings - started on a slow note but switched gears effortlessly once he reached his fifty. In fact, he raced from 50 to 250 off just 94 balls - a knock that would bolster his case for the opening spot in next year's World Cup.
Even international cricketers were mesmerized by the innings. From former England captain Michael Vaughan who was tongue-in-cheek with his message to Jos Buttler - wishes kept coming in.
It is not every day that records are broken. And it would definitely take a long time before Wednesday's record is broken, if at all.
