Kolkata: In the wake of Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes' critical head injury, former ICC president Jagmohan Dalmiya on Wednesday suggested a review of safety gears which cricketers put on such as the helmet.

"I feel that the safety factor of the modern day cricket gears and equipment needs to be evaluated in order to assess whether there is any further scope of improvement for better protection of the players," Dalmiya said expressing shock at the incident.

The Cricket Association of Bengal chief further wished the lefthander batsman a speedy recovery.

"The news came as a rude shock to me. I pray to the Almighty for his speedy recovery." South Australia's Hughes, who was wearing a protective batting helmet, was hit on the head by a bouncer bowled by New South Wales fast bowler Sean Abbott during a Sheffield Shield game in Sydney.

Hughes has undergone a surgery and remains in critical condition at the St Vincent Hospital.
